When is the right time to buy a new mattress?
Different factors will determin the 'right' time for your mattress replacement. Bearing in mind that most people enjoy 6-10 hours sleep per night on there current mattress - that's right around 35% of our lives our spent in our beds. Therefore a whole host of factors will help make your new purchase, such like:
- Do you currently experiance poor sleep?
-
Are you suffering with back pain?
-
Is your mattress suffering with wear & tear?
-
Do you enjoy your sleep in a different bed?
You should feel refeshed when you wake up not tied and worn out!
Choosing the right product for you:
There are a number of key factors to consider when purchasing a new bed:
-
Comfort and support: What the right firmness rating for you? Soft, Medium or Firm? Remember, your body should be supported in all the right places and a poor mattress will give you disturbed sleeping patterns.
-
Size: Beds come in all shapes and sizes, so choosing the right size and type will be very important. You need to consider the room size, will it accomoate for a bigger bed with room to move? Are you sharing your bed and require enough room for two?

Replace the Mattress or the whole bed?
Depending on the type of bed construction bedstead or divan, it may not be necessary to replace everything to obtain the best result. In the case of a divan, does it have posture top (inbuilt support)? Or a straight forward platform top (usually solid top)? A lot of bedsteads now come with posture sprung slats are these in good order or are they worn?
What's your style?
Beds come in a number of styles including:
Divans: These are purely base for the mattress with either springs that flex around your body or a solid base for firmer support. The bonus with a divan is that it can provide valuable storing space in the form of drawers so these are ideal where storage is limited. They're unfussy and allow for an optional headboard if desired. Think about choosing one to co-ordinate with your other bedroom furniture.
Bedsteads: A style that will add more interest to your bedroom, choose from traditional to contemporary styles. If you're tall, consider a low end bedstead if you don't want a restricted bed length. Bases are either solid or sprung for more cushioned support.
Guest storage beds: A practical solution for an occasional guest bed that slides neatly underneath the main bed.
Different types of Mattress:
There are many mattresses available using different support systems, materials and fillings, for temperature control and comfort.
- Pocket spring mattressThese mattresses contain small springs contained within their own individual pockets so they work independently to support and mould to your body shape. These are perfect for couples of different weights to prevent 'roll together'. The edges are hand-stitched for durability and stability.
- Open coil mattressThis is the most commonly used spring system that links all the springs together to spread bodyweight across the surface of the mattress. A border rod or wire around the edge of the mattress helps to keep its shape.
- Visco-elastic mattressNon-sprung, these mattresses are made from an open cell, breathable material that's sensitive to temperature. Body heat helps to mould the material to your contours, relieving pressure points and promoting circulation. These are hypo-allergenic with anti-microbial properties.
- Latex mattressAgain, rather than using springs, this hypo-allergenic polymer material conforms to your body's contours. It's breathable so you won't overheat and is resilient providing excellent durability.
